Frequently Asked Questions Back

Q: When did you start writing?

A: I had my first book published in 1999, but I have always loved writing stories. I wrote my first full-length book when I was 13. It was a pony story called The Night Riders and was never published but I still have a copy of it now.

Q: Do you like being an author?

A: I love being an author. You get to make up stories for a living and meet really interesting people. I really enjoy it when I get to meet children who like my books and who know the characters and books as well as I do.

Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t an author?

A:I’ve done lots of different jobs – I worked in the theatre backstage as a stage manager, and have been a teacher and worked in a bookshop and been a dog trainer, a groom and taught after school drama classes. I would probably like to teach drama if I wasn’t an author.

Q: What’s your favourite book out of the books you have written?

A:It’s a really difficult question to answer! I have different favourite books in the different series I write. In My Secret Unicorn my favourite books are A Special Friend, Snowy Dreams and Starlight Surprise. My favourite Stardust book is Shadows of Magic and my favourite Not Quite a Mermaid book is Mermaid Surprise. I also really like Centre Stage because it reminds me of being at school and because the main character, Sophie, is quite like me!

Q: Who was your favourite author when you were growing up?

A:When I was growing up I read lots and lots of books and I used to re-read many of them over and over again until I knew them almost off by heart. My favourite authors were Enid Blyton, E. Nesbit, Noel Streatfeild, the Pullein-Thompson sisters who wrote pony books and Ruby Ferguson who also wrote pony books.

Q: Do you have a horse?

A:I don’t have a horse at the moment because life is very busy with writing and looking after my children and my two Bernese Mountain dogs but I definitely plan on getting one again when I have a bit more time. I had five different horses when I was growing up – Swizzle, Pepper, Heidi, Juan and Tan. They were all grey and Swizzle looked very like I imagine Twilight to look, but he was much naughtier!
